20TH ANNIVERSARY Is new infrastructure important in the changing energy model? The net zero economy must be created with clean power and clean fuels, so we need new infrastructure to produce, distribute, use and export them. Electrification offers a quick way to reduce emissions over many sectors, for example in personal transport or construction. Clean fuel such as hydrogen, renewable natural gas and liquid synthetic fuels will play a critical role in ‘hard-to-decarbonize’ sectors. For this reason, our 2021 budget includes 1.5 billion dollars for new clean fuel production facilities and to expand existing facilities, along with establishing sustainable biomass supply chains and developing codes and standards. We are also deploying 33,500 electric vehicle chargers and ten hydrogen stations. How are Canadian cities preparing? From coast to coast, municipalities have declared a climate emergency and embraced their role in reaching net-zero in greenhouse emissions by 2050. As the global mean temperature keeps rising, towns and cities throughout Canada will experience warmer temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, more frequent and intense extreme weather events and a rise in sea-levels. These biophysical impacts will affect built infrastructure, natural WITH 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY, MR WILKINSON WAS THE MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE, FISHERIES, AND NOW NATURAL RESOURCES, IN A COUNTRY THAT’S A GLOBAL NATIONAL PARK.
