Context DANIEL CUARTERO MARTÍNEZ Technical Director of ACCIONA’s Construction Business “Technical direction brings together spe-cialized know-how in a diverse range of areas, from engineering to innovation to digital trans-formation to the Self-Performing Office, with the aim of improving the company’s financial profitability and the implementation of ESG metrics. To do so, we try to be catalysts and drivers of new measures in the area of construction. Our efforts to electri-fy minor equipment are a good example of this.” ROBERTO CARBALLO MARTíN Director of the Construction Project Support Department, Offshore Wind, R&D, and DT “Our goal is to ensure ACCIONA’s profitabil-ity and competitiveness on any major project through specialization and the performance of critical activities, and to do so, moreover, with our own internal resources. We study each pro-ject in detail, because all of them are unique, as well as the resources available in order to ensure technical excellence, minimize the project’s impact, and maximize the creation of economic, social, and environmental value.” CONTEXT It determines the technicians, equipment, and machinery required for each project to maximize its profitability. It’s vital for controlling quality and for minimizing risks, time frame variations, and cost overruns. It conducts the initial assessment of project costs and subcontract prices to improve ACCIONA’s competitiveness. Its duties are performed in the company’s Central Workshops, the Self-Performing Office, and the Plant & Machinery Asset Management team. It controls purchasing, operation, supply, mainte-nance, and adaptation of equipment, machinery, and production facilities. It has adapted and main-tained 13 tunnel boring machines for different pro-jects as well as, among other examples, equipment for paving, earth-moving, concrete and asphalt manufacturing, road construction, and drilling. One example of its work with tunnel boring machines is “the management of their operation, maintenance, and reconditioning to maximize their service life, minimize waste, and eliminate emis-sions by powering them exclusively with renewable electricity,” says Mariano Calero, a manager in the Tunnels and Auxiliary Equipment Unit of the Self-Performing Office.
