INFRAESTRUCTURE If it was a Twitter thread, the phrase would link up nicely to the vastness of Southeast Asia. I told you it was the future. And that it’s the present. The region has over 600 million inhabitants (with a massive need for infrastructure), technology is on the rise (it’s part of the semi-conductor value chain), and it respects its natural heritage. Despite its diversity (Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, Islam, etc.), its most dynamic countries share a common trait: faith in pro-gress through faith in education. Some things are lacking, of course (what place has ever been perfect?), for instance regulatory certainty, absence of red tape, and greater economic openness, but part of the area allows ACCIONA to compete and values its long corporate history, its sus-tainable vision that’s adaptable to specific local features, and its goal of becoming a permanent fixture. In Asia, past projects and the ability to build alliances are a resume that opens doors. If, as economic science affirms, open markets create more wealth than protectionism, these open markets could encourage the others to gradually relax their barriers. Growth projections confirm that the Earth’s rotational axis is shifting toward ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) with massive investments in manufacturing, the digital economy, and infrastructure. I told you so.
