The brickwork inside the building is covered with a white glaze —which is also a painting technique— that makes that light at the end of the pier shine even brighter even as it protects the baked clay. The inner wood-en structure of the roof is interwoven with the original pine, which has been treated and restored. It almost looks like a ruby-red coffered ceil-ing. The restored central roof lantern creates a skylight. According to Miguel Ángel Gil, a special projects manager in ACCIONA’s real estate division, it’s a unique case because the Onyx photovoltaic panels act as solar panels, allowing the building to generate its own electricity, and their transparency lets the light pass through. The sides feature enormous windows that have the highest possible energy efficiency and are supported by the original 1903 metalwork. From under the massive lintel at the entrance, the observer is struck by the fact that the building’s entire inner structure is made of wood: Asturian oak with a beautiful grain pattern has been sanded to a soft finish and provides warmth and comfort. Foster designed three staggered floors that create a series of floating terraces which preserve each area’s privacy. The different levels pro-vide a sense of connection, maximizing natural light and fluid move-
